welcome to the

WWALK Research Lab

Weaving Wildlife and Land-based Knowledges

We are located at the University of Calgary, which is situated on the homelands of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations), the Tsuut’ina Nation, and the Îyâxe (Stoney) Nakoda Nations, as well as the Métis. These lands, situated in Treaty 7 territory and the Metis Nation of Alberta Region 3, are deeply connected to the histories, cultures, and knowledges of each of these Nations.

Our research spans across what is now called Canada, on the ancestral homelands of a diversity of Indigenous Nations, including the Anishinaabe, Cree, Blackfoot, Stoney Nakoda, and Métis.

This land acknowledgment is a commitment to conducting research that honours relationships among Nations and fosters a more harmonious coexistence with the natural world. Through collaboration with Indigenous Nations, and by honouring diverse ways of knowing and relating to the Land, we strive to approach wildlife ecology and conservation in ways that respect and reflect the deep connections between people, wildlife, and the Land. Our work is grounded in reciprocity, guided by humility, and driven by a vision for a future where ecological and cultural sustainability go hand in hand.
